The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of India’s oldest and most important Buddhist monuments, originally commissioned by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE and later enlarged. Its hemispherical dome, surrounding railings, and four elaborately carved gateways depict Buddhist symbols and stories associated with the life and previous births of the Buddha.
