Barabar Hills and Caves

Barabar Hills contain India’s oldest surviving rock-cut caves, created mainly during the Mauryan period in the 3rd century BCE. Several caves were dedicated by Emperor Ashoka and his successor Dasharatha to Ajivika ascetics, and their precisely polished granite interiors demonstrate the exceptional stoneworking skills of ancient India.
