Barabar Caves are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, created during the Mauryan period in the 3rd century BCE. Several were dedicated by Emperor Ashoka and his successor Dasharatha to Ajivika ascetics, and their precisely carved chambers and highly polished granite interiors demonstrate the exceptional engineering skills of ancient India.
