Adalaj Stepwell is an elaborately carved five-story stepwell near Ahmedabad, completed in the late 15th century. Its octagonal entrance, descending galleries, pillars, and detailed stone ornament combine Hindu and Islamic design influences while demonstrating the sophisticated water-management traditions of western India.
