Arjuna’s Penance, also known as the Descent of the Ganges, is a monumental open-air rock relief created at Mahabalipuram during the Pallava period in the 7th century. Its densely carved figures of gods, humans, animals, and mythical beings illustrate either Arjuna’s penance or the sacred descent of the River Ganges.
